Durey - Chansons Basques

Chansons Basques

Durey (1919)

Mon chien cherche à me mordre et m'a abandonné.

Polka

Sirocco joli vent chaud,
Mets tes espadrilles
Entre dans le chambre en chaux
De la jeune fille;
Fais-la sortir de son lit
Et se chercher un mari,
Dans la ville de Paris
Loin de sa famille.

Attelage

Jean Cocteau

Basques songs

Prayer

Holy Virgin Mary have pity on those
who come back from war and who have no money.

My wife loves another, she laughs in my face
my dog looks to bite me and has abandoned me.

They call me a drunkard and if I want some wine
they give me a little water and a scrap of bread.

Holy Virgin Mary have pity on those folk.

Polka

Sirocco pretty warm wind,
put on your espadrilles
come into the white-washed room
of the young lady;
make her get out of her bed
and look for a husband,
in the town of Paris
far from her family.

Harnessed team

Two houses approach sideways.
They have placed carpets of flowers on the windows.
A big chandelier crowns them and
sunny shimmerings trail from their
sad mouths along the road.
